You start at 7:00 am beside the Morrison Center on the Boise State campus, cross onto the Greenbelt, and within a few minutes the city noise is replaced by the Boise River running fast with May snowmelt on your left. The path is paved, tree-shaded and nearly flat, so your job is simply to hold a rhythm. The marathon is two laps of the half course, which means you will see the same bridges, the same cottonwoods and the same cheering families twice, and you will know exactly where the small rollers are the second time around. Be aware that the Greenbelt stays open to cyclists and walkers during the race, so keep right and stay alert. The field is small, a few hundred marathoners, and the finish-line baked potato is real.
