You line up at 6:45 a.m. in the big parking lot east of Howard Wood Field, with the morning still cool and the stadium behind you. The first half of the course rolls gently through Terrace Park and the surrounding neighborhoods; the hills are short and come early, so you get them out of the way while your legs are fresh. Around halfway the surface changes under your feet as you drop onto the Big Sioux River greenway, a smooth paved bike trail that stays nearly flat all the way home. The cutoff is generous at six and a half hours, and the field is small, roughly four hundred marathon finishers, so aid stations are quick and parking is easy. The finish is on the stadium track inside Howard Wood Field, so hold a little back for that last curve.
Mostly flat loop: gentle rolling hills through Terrace Park and neighborhoods in the first half, then the nearly flat paved Big Sioux River greenway trail in the second half, starting in the parking lot east of Howard Wood Field and finishing on the stadium track. Course map ↗
