You start at 7:30 am from the campground at the Kentucky Horse Park, roll briefly along the Legacy Trail, and then turn onto narrow country lanes lined with black four-board fences. For the next twenty-some miles the view barely changes and never gets old: limestone walls, white barns, and thoroughbreds standing in the morning mist, close enough that you can hear them snort as the pack goes by. The roads roll constantly; there is no single hard hill, just 1,300 feet of steady up and down that wears on the quads after mile 18. This is not a Boston course and the field is small, around 150 marathoners, so the aid stations and a few farm families are your crowd. Come for the scenery, run by effort rather than pace, and enjoy the quietest marathon in the state.
About 98% on rolling Central Kentucky country roads past more than 50 horse farms, with short sections on the Legacy Trail at the start and finish; roughly 1,300 ft of climbing.
