Wineglass is the kind of race you choose on purpose. You ride a bus out to Bath in the dark, stand around with a couple thousand nervous people, and then run back toward Corning down a valley that keeps giving you a little help. The drop is gentle rather than punishing, within Boston's standard, so your legs are not wrecked by halfway. Early October in the Finger Lakes usually means cool air and trees turning along the river. The last mile crosses a pedestrian bridge over the Chemung River and spills onto Market Street's brick storefronts, where the crowd is loud for a small town. Pick up your bib at the Corning Museum of Glass the day before and give yourself time to look around. You have six and a half hours; most people need far less.
