You start at Easton's Beach with the sound of surf behind you and 7:30 AM light coming off the water. The first miles trace the Atlantic coastline, where waves crash against the rocks below Ocean Drive and the salt air is cool enough that you will want gloves in October. Then Bellevue Avenue, lined with Gilded Age mansions whose gates you pass close enough to read the names. Expect rolling hills the whole way; the course never climbs above 105 feet, but 847 feet of total gain adds up, especially in the second half when the marathon turns onto Middletown's quiet rural roads, past stone walls and farm fields, with few spectators and only your breathing for company. Pace the hills patiently and you will come back to the beach for a finish along the sand. Six hours is the limit, and an early start is offered.
