Omaha's marathon dates to 1975 and, after nearly a decade under an out-of-town promoter, returned to local hands in 2022 with the Omaha Running Club in charge. The USATF-certified course covers downtown and runs mostly out-and-back with rolling hills, about 443 feet of gain, along Carter Lake and the Missouri River, where the morning light on the water is the quiet reward of an early start. It is a small race, 389 marathon finishers in 2026, so expect a low-key, well-supported day with aid every two to three miles rather than big crowds or long corrals. The 2026 race was September 27; the 2027 date has not been announced. The club runs a 20-week training clinic starting in April, which is a good on-ramp if you live nearby.
