You start at 5:00 am outside the Outrigger on Kaanapali Beach, and for the first hour the only light comes from headlamps and the glow of resort lobbies. The course heads south along the Honoapiilani Highway with the ocean on your right, and as the sky lightens you can hear the surf against the lava rock below the road shoulder. The turnaround near Papalaua Wayside comes after the sun has cleared the West Maui Mountains, and from there it is the same road back with the trade wind now in your face. With about 150 feet of total climb, this is a legitimate chance at a fast time if you handle the heat, and the eight-hour limit means a walk break will not end your day. The field is small, a few hundred marathoners, so bring your own cup and your own company.
